Reliable home check-ins in Chicago

When your home sits empty, small problems do not wait. A trusted local set of eyes, walking through on a steady schedule, is the simplest way to protect your home and actually relax while you are away.

Best known across Chicago's North Side for our professional dog walking and cat sitting, we bring the same reliable, security-minded habits to home check-ins. Every visit is a real walk-through, not a glance from the curb: doors and windows checked, mail brought in, temperature confirmed, and a look for anything out of place, with a photo report so you always know your home is fine.

And you are never handed off to a stranger each visit. Your home is checked by the same trusted sitters who look after the neighborhood's pets, a primary caregiver plus a fully briefed backup, so the person walking through your home always knows it, and you always know who has your keys.

What's included

What every check-in covers

  • Exterior and entry security check: walking the property and confirming doors, windows, and the garage are locked and secure, with a look for anything out of place.
  • Mail, packages, and deliveries: bringing in mail and packages so they do not pile up and signal an empty home, and setting them where you ask.
  • A lived-in look: alternating lights and blinds and varying the routine so the house does not look obviously empty from the street.
  • Temperature and systems check: confirming the heat or air conditioning is running and the home is at a safe temperature, which matters most in Chicago's deep winter and peak summer.
  • Water and leak check: looking for leaks, drips, or water where it should not be, since a small leak caught early prevents major, expensive damage.
  • Plants and basic upkeep: watering indoor and outdoor plants to your instructions and handling small tasks you have arranged in advance.
A real check, not a drive-by

More than a quick look around

A home check-in is only worth something if it is thorough and consistent. Anyone can glance at a front door. Protecting a home means actually walking through it and knowing what to look for.

  • A real walk-through of the whole property, not a glance from the curb
  • Checking every door, window, and the garage, not just the front entrance
  • Knowing the signs of trouble: a leak, a tripped breaker, a too-cold house, a forced entry
  • Watching the temperature in deep winter, when a failed furnace can mean frozen, burst pipes
  • Bringing in mail and packages so the home never looks empty
  • Varying lights and blinds for a genuinely lived-in look
  • A documented, photo-backed report after every single visit
  • Knowing your emergency contacts and plan before anything ever goes wrong

This is the operational reliability that builds real trust with the people who hand us their keys, and it is exactly the kind of demonstrated care that sets a serious provider apart.

From our founder

Your home, treated like our own

I started Sparky Steps because people needed someone they could truly trust with what matters most while they are away. For many of our clients, that is not only their pets, it is their home.

An empty house is quietly vulnerable. A small leak, a furnace that quits in January, a pile of packages that announces nobody is home: any one of them can turn a relaxing trip into an expensive mess. The fix is simple, but it has to be consistent: a trusted person actually walking through, paying attention, and catching the small thing before it becomes a big one.

Many of our home check-in clients are also pet parents who already rely on us in their homes, and we treat your place the way we would want ours treated. I would rather earn your trust through careful, documented habits than a quick glance from the curb.

Why it matters in Chicago

An empty home in Chicago needs eyes on it

Home check-ins are not just a nicety here. A few very Chicago realities make a regular, trusted check genuinely worth it.

❄️

The frozen-pipe season

Chicago winters are no joke. When a home sits empty and the heat falters, pipes can freeze and burst, causing some of the most expensive damage a house can suffer. A regular check catches a cold house or a failed furnace before it becomes a flood.

✈️

A city of snowbirds

Plenty of Chicagoans head somewhere warm for the winter, or travel for weeks at a stretch. A home left alone for a month is exactly when a trusted local set of eyes matters most.

📦

The empty-house tell

Piled-up mail, packages on the porch, blinds that never move: these quietly announce that nobody is home. Collecting deliveries and varying the lived-in look is simple, and it makes a real difference.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions about Chicago home check-ins

Will I get the same trusted sitters every time?
Yes. Your home is checked by a primary, consistent sitter who learns your property and your routine. If your primary sitter is ever unavailable, a fully briefed backup steps in, so your home's care never skips a beat.
What exactly do you check during a home check-in?
We walk the property and confirm doors, windows, and the garage are secure, bring in mail and packages, check that the heat or air conditioning is keeping the home at a safe temperature, look for any leaks or water issues, vary lights and blinds for a lived-in look, and water plants to your instructions. You get a photo report after every visit.
How often should I schedule check-ins while I am away?
It depends on how long you are gone and your peace of mind. Every few days is common, and we often suggest more frequent visits during Chicago's deep winter, when the risk of a failed furnace and frozen pipes is highest. We will help you set a schedule that fits your home and trip.
What happens if you find a problem, like a leak or an unlocked door?
We contact you right away, with photos, and follow the plan we set up in advance. That might mean securing the home, calling a plumber or contact you have designated, or staying until help arrives. You decide how you want issues handled before you leave.
Can you also bring in mail, water plants, and handle packages?
Yes. Mail and package collection and plant watering are part of a standard check-in, and we are happy to handle small arranged tasks too. Just let us know what you need at your walk-through.
Which Chicago neighborhoods do you serve?
We serve the North Side, including Albany Park, Edgewater, Uptown, North Center, Avondale, Irving Park, North Park, Andersonville, Ravenswood, and Roscoe Village. If you are nearby and not listed, reach out and we will let you know.
Do you offer a free walk-through before my trip?
Yes, and we recommend it. We will tour your home, learn what to check and how systems work, note alarm codes and entry details, and confirm your emergency contacts and wishes before the first visit, all at no charge.
